Automatic Reminder Backup — Change Phones Without Losing Your Schedule

App reinstall, new phone, TestFlight update — your dosage schedules can survive them all. mojApteczka automatically synchronises reminders with the cloud and restores them without you having to do anything.

The Problem: Disappearing Reminders

Imagine this: you install a new version of the app, open it and see an empty reminder list — yet notifications continue to go off. Or the reverse: you change phones, restore data from iCloud, and half of the schedules are missing.

This is not just a theoretical scenario. Under certain conditions, app updates can wipe the local database, while scheduled iOS notifications survive a reinstall and continue to go off — with no corresponding entry in the app. The result is so-called "ghost reminders": alarms you cannot turn off because they no longer exist on any app screen.

How Does Automatic Backup Work?

mojApteczka solves this problem in two stages:

Stage 1 — Local Clean-up (Immediate)

Every time the app opens, it compares scheduled iOS notifications with local reminder records. Any notification that has no corresponding entry in the database is automatically removed. No ghost reminders, no unlabelled alarms.

Stage 2 — Cloud Synchronisation (Backup)

Every reminder you add, edit or delete is synchronised to the server in the background. When the app opens, it compares the local state with the cloud copy:

  • Reminders present in the cloud but missing locally → restored automatically
  • Reminders present locally but missing from the cloud → uploaded to the cloud
  • Conflicts (same reminder, different data) → the more recent modification wins

The entire process runs in the background and takes a fraction of a second. You see no "synchronise" button and no loading screen.

What Is Synchronised?

The backup covers the full state of every reminder:

  • Medicine name and record identifier
  • Assigned home medicine cabinet and person in your care
  • Repeat type — daily, selected days of the week, every N days
  • Dosage times and quantities (with fractional dose support)
  • Active / inactive status
  • Number of doses taken and any treatment-course limit

After reminders are restored, the app automatically reschedules iOS notifications — the schedule starts working again without you having to do anything.

When Is the Backup Especially Important?

  • Changing phones — you move from an iPhone 14 to an iPhone 15, and an older adult's dosage schedule is restored at first login
  • Reinstalling from TestFlight — each new beta version does not put your schedules at risk
  • iCloud restore — if data migration was incomplete, the mojApteczka cloud serves as a second recovery point
  • Clearing app data — whatever the reason for clearing the local database, your data remains safe in the cloud

Security and Privacy

Reminder data is stored on AWS servers in the EU region (Frankfurt), encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. Every synchronisation request requires a valid Cognito token — each user's data is completely isolated from other users' data.

Synchronisation works only while you are logged in. After you log out, local data and the cloud copy are deleted together — in line with GDPR.

Availability

The automatic reminder backup feature is available in the iOS mobile app. It runs in the background every time the app is opened, with no configuration required.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to do anything for the reminder backup to work?
No. The backup is fully automatic. Every schedule change (adding, editing, deleting) is synchronised with the cloud in the background. There is no "sync" button or configuration required.
What are "ghost reminders" and how does mojApteczka remove them?
Ghost reminders are iOS notifications that keep firing after the app is deleted or its data is cleared — because iOS does not remove scheduled notifications on reinstallation. Each time mojApteczka launches it compares scheduled notifications with local records and removes any notification that has no matching entry in the database.
What happens to my reminders when I change phones?
After logging in on a new device, the app downloads the reminder backup from the cloud and automatically sets iOS notifications. Your dosage schedule is restored without any action on your part.
Is the reminder backup secure?
Yes. Data is stored on AWS servers in the EU region (Frankfurt), encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. Every synchronisation request requires a valid authentication token — data is completely isolated between users. After logout, data is deleted locally and from the cloud in accordance with GDPR.
Does reminder backup work on Android?
The feature is currently available in the iOS app. The Android version will receive reminder backup in future updates.
