No more entering medicine names and expiry dates by hand. mojApteczka uses artificial intelligence to recognise a medicine from a photo of its packaging in seconds.

What Is AI Medicine Recognition?

AI medicine recognition is a mojApteczka feature that lets you add a medicine to your home medicine cabinet with a single photo. Simply take a picture of the medicine packaging — artificial intelligence reads the brand name, strength and expiry date from the photo, then fills in the active ingredient and medicine form after matching it against the official register.

The recognised name is matched against the Register of Medicinal Products maintained by the Office for Registration of Medicinal Products (URPL) — the active ingredient and medicine form come from there, refreshed daily.

How Does Medicine Scanning Work?

The recognition process is simple and takes just a few seconds:

  1. Open the mojApteczka app and tap the "Scan" button

  2. Take a few photos of the medicine packaging — the app will ask you to photograph:

    • the front of the packaging — showing the medicine name
    • the barcode — located on the box
    • the expiry date — printed on the packaging or blister

Sometimes the front of the packaging shows both the name and expiry date, but ensure all three elements are captured: medicine name, barcode and expiry date

  3. Wait for recognition — AI analyses the image and matches the medicine to the database

  4. Review the result — verify the recognised details (name, strength, expiry date)

  5. Save the medicine to your home medicine cabinet with a single tap

The whole process typically takes 3 to 10 seconds, depending on photo quality and connection speed.

What Does the AI Recognise?

Our AI system analyses the packaging photo and automatically reads:

  • Brand name — e.g. Apap, Ibuprom, Rutinoscorbin
  • Strength — e.g. 500 mg, 200 mg, 100 mg/ml
  • Expiry date — read from the packaging or 2D code
  • Batch number — if it is visible in the photo

The active ingredient and medicine form are added by matching the medicine against the Register of Medicinal Products — they are not read from the photo.

Which Medicines Can Be Scanned?

AI recognition works with medicines available in Poland — both prescription (Rx) and over-the-counter (OTC). The system supports:

  • Medicines in cardboard boxes — the most common form of packaging
  • Blister-packed medicines — if the label is legible
  • Dietary supplements — with clear labelling
  • Foreign medicines — with limited accuracy

Tip: You'll get the best results by photographing each element (front, barcode, expiry date) in good lighting. Avoid angled shots and make sure the image is sharp.

Verify before saving

The AI reads data from the packaging so you don't have to type it manually. You can review and correct every recognised field — name, strength, expiry date, and barcode — in a single view before saving the medicine to your home medicine cabinet.

You'll get the best results for medicines available in Polish pharmacies with clearly visible packaging and expiry dates. For rare medicines, damaged packaging, or foreign labels, you can edit the name or strength manually after the scan.

Data Security

Photos of medicine packaging are processed securely:

  • Photos are transmitted over an encrypted connection (HTTPS/TLS)
  • AI analysis takes place on servers within the European Union
  • Photos are deleted after recognition is complete — they are not stored
  • Your medical data is protected in compliance with GDPR

Benefits of Automatic Scanning

Why use AI recognition instead of entering medicines manually?

  • Save time — adding a medicine takes seconds, not minutes
  • Fewer manual mistakes — instead of retyping the name and strength from the packaging, you review the AI result in a single view before saving
  • Automatic expiry tracking — no more expired medicines
  • Easy sharing — scanned medicines are immediately visible to your whole family
  • Medicine history — a complete overview of what you have in your home medicine cabinet

If you are scanning medicines with a child's safety in mind, see the category page paediatrics in the medicine cabinet — right after the scan, you can see whether the medicine has a paediatric label, from what age it can be used, and when a child's weight matters.

Where the data comes from — and what the result does not mean

  • Source: from the photo we read the name, strength and expiry date on the packaging; the recognised name is matched against the Register of Medicinal Products (RPL) maintained by URPL — the active substance and dosage form come from the register, not from the photo.
  • Coverage: medicines available in Poland (prescription and OTC); foreign medicines with limited accuracy.
  • Updated: the register data is refreshed daily — the full description of sources, dates and processing is in sources & methodology.
  • Limitations: this is an organisational tool. You confirm the result before saving; the app does not judge whether a medicine is right for you, and does not replace a pharmacist or doctor.
