Administer medicine — measure the dose and confirm with one tap
Taking medicine is something we do every day — sometimes several times a day. For someone caring for an older adult, a child, or several household members, the number of doses to give in a single day can feel overwhelming. The medicine administration feature in mojApteczka turns this process into a simple, controlled action: choose the medicine, measure the dose, confirm — and your home medicine cabinet updates automatically.
What is the medicine administration feature?
Medicine administration lets you record that a specific dose has been taken, directly from the medicine card in your home medicine cabinet. Instead of manually adjusting quantities and guessing how many tablets are left, one tap is enough — the system deducts the right amount from stock and logs the event in the dose history.
This is especially important when:
- you administer several medicines daily at different doses and times,
- you care for someone and need to track who took what, using the caregiver role,
- you want to be sure your home medicine cabinet reflects the actual number of doses left,
- you want the shopping list to update automatically when supplies run low.
How does medicine administration work in mojApteczka?
The process is simple and takes just a few seconds:
- open the medicine card in your home medicine cabinet,
- tap the dose administration button,
- the dose stepper lets you set the exact amount — including fractional doses (½ tablet, ¼ tablet, decimal values for liquids),
- choose the recipient — yourself, a family member, or a dependant,
- confirm — the stock updates instantly on your device, and syncs to the cloud in the background (even if you are currently offline).
Confirmation does not wait for the server — the interface responds instantly, and the change is saved locally. Two people administering the same medicine at the same moment? Both operations are safely recorded on their devices and reconciled on the server once both are back online.
Works offline — your dose is always recorded
Since version 1.7.0, mojApteczka has recorded dose confirmations instantly on the device, regardless of connectivity. For caregivers at a patient's home, in hospital, in the countryside, or in a brick-walled basement, that is the difference between "it works" and "I have to remember and enter it later":
- Instant response — the screen reacts without loading, even when the internet is down.
- Pending administrations are queued — each operation waits safely on the device.
- Automatic sync — when connectivity returns, the queue sends pending administrations to the cloud.
- Survives app closure and a flat phone battery — the queue is saved to disk, so it survives a restart.
We describe the offline behaviour in a dedicated article: administering medicines without internet. The same "local-first" philosophy applies to the offline SmPC documentation and the pharmacy map — mojApteczka is designed to work where the internet can be unreliable.
Fractional doses — precision when it matters
Not every medicine is taken as a whole tablet. Children often receive half or a quarter of a tablet, and liquid doses are measured in millilitres, sometimes to a fraction. That is why the dose stepper in mojApteczka supports:
- halves and quarters of tablets — useful for paediatric dosing or gradual dose tapering,
- decimal doses for liquids — when a syrup needs to be measured to, say, 2.5 ml,
- any custom value — matched to the doctor's instructions.
This ensures that the recorded use matches the actual amount administered, rather than being rounded up to a full unit.
What happens to the leftover dose?
When you administer a fractional dose — for example, half a tablet — a prompt appears: what will you do with the rest? mojApteczka offers a simple choice:
- I keep the rest — the other half goes back into the home medicine cabinet and will be available for the next dose,
- I throw it away — if the tablet cannot be stored after splitting, the entire unit is deducted from stock.
This is a small but important mechanism. It keeps your home medicine cabinet aligned with what you actually have available — with no manual corrections and no surprises at the next dose.
Dose recipient — you are not only administering medicine to yourself
In many households, one person manages medicines for the entire family. That is why, when administering a dose, you can choose who it is for:
- yourself — the default choice when you take the medicine yourself,
- a family member — if you share a home medicine cabinet, for example with a partner or a parent,
- a dependant — an older adult, a child, or another person in your care.
Dose history is recorded separately for each recipient. This means the PDF report for the doctor clearly shows who took which medicine and when.
Automatic stock management
Every administered dose reduces the medicine's stock level. When stock drops below the set threshold, the medicine automatically appears on the shopping list. You do not need to manually check how many tablets are left — the system does it for you after every confirmation.
Combined with dosage reminders, this creates a closed loop: the system reminds you about a dose, you confirm it, the home medicine cabinet updates, and when supplies run low, the medicine gets priority on the shopping list.
Availability
The medicine administration feature is available on all platforms — in the browser at mojapteczka.pl and in the mobile app on iOS and Android. Regardless of device, the process is the same: tap, measure, confirm.
How it connects with other features
Medicine administration works best in combination with other mojApteczka features:
- Dosage reminders tell you when the next dose is due,
- Shopping list automatically flags dwindling supplies,
- Expiry date alerts help ensure the medicine you are administering has not expired,
- PDF report for the doctor lets you share the full dosing history during a visit,
- Notes let you record extra information about administration — for example "take with food" or "do not mix with milk".
Important limitation
The medicine administration feature is a tool for recording doses and managing the stock in your home medicine cabinet. It helps you keep medicine use organised and under control, but it does not replace a doctor's or pharmacist's advice on dosage, frequency, or method of administration.
Important: dosage should always follow a specialist's recommendations. mojApteczka helps you record administered doses but does not determine which dose you should take.
The medicine administration feature in mojApteczka turns the daily dosing routine into a controlled, simple process. Measure the dose, confirm with one tap — and your home medicine cabinet takes care of the rest.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I dispense a medicine from the kit in mojApteczka?
- Open the medicine card in your kit and tap the dispense icon (pill). Choose the dose using the stepper, select the recipient, and confirm. The stock level updates automatically — instantly on-device, and syncs to the cloud in the background.
- Does mojApteczka support fractional doses and liquid medicines?
- Yes, the stepper lets you choose fractional doses (½, ¼ of a tablet) and enter any decimal value for liquid medicines (e.g. 7.5 ml of syrup). For fractional doses the app will ask what you did with the remaining piece of the tablet.
- How does automatic stock deduction work?
- After confirming a dose, the stock level updates instantly on your device and syncs to the cloud in the background. When you are online, the operation reaches the server immediately; when offline, it waits safely in a queue and sends automatically once the internet returns. Two people dispensing the same medicine at the same moment? Both operations are recorded and reconciled on the server as soon as both come back online.
- Can I dispense a medicine offline in mojApteczka?
- Yes. Since version 1.7.0, confirming a dose saves instantly on the device even without connectivity — the screen responds without delay. Pending doses are safely stored in a queue and synchronised to the cloud automatically when the connection returns. Closing the app or a dead battery will not lose a recorded dose. See the dedicated article on dispensing medicines without internet for details.
- Can I dispense a medicine for someone other than myself?
- Yes, when dispensing a medicine you can select the recipient from the list — yourself, a family member from a shared kit, or a dependent. The recipient information is saved in the dispense history.
