Offline SPC Documentation — Drug Leaflets Without Internet | mojApteczka

8,000+ medicines with full offline SPC documentation — indications, dosage, contraindications, side effects. Works in airplane mode after first sync.

Offline SmPC Documentation — Full Medicine Information Without an Internet Connection

No more searching Google for leaflets. No more waiting for a PDF to load from an external site. Indications, dosage, contraindications and adverse reactions for over 8,000 medicines — synchronised once, always available, even in aeroplane mode.

What Is Offline SmPC Documentation?

SmPC documentation (summary of product characteristics) is an official pharmaceutical document approved by the regulator. It contains the key clinical information about a medicine. Unlike a standard patient information leaflet (PIL), which is written for patients, the SmPC is intended for healthcare professionals and provides precise information on the active substance, mechanism of action, dosage and interactions.

mojApteczka synchronises SmPC documentation for over 8,000 Polish medicinal products directly to your device. The data is ready to view in milliseconds — with no internet connection, no waiting for a PDF and no need to leave the app.

What Does the SmPC Documentation in mojApteczka Contain?

Each SmPC entry covers nine clinical sections, shown as expandable cards on the medicine card:

  • Indications — what the medicine is used for and which conditions it treats
  • Dosage — recommended doses for adults, children and high-risk groups
  • Contraindications — when the medicine should not be used
  • Warnings and precautions — situations requiring special attention
  • Drug interactions — which substances the medicine may interact with
  • Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding — safety for pregnant and breastfeeding women
  • Adverse reactions — possible side effects classified by frequency
  • Overdose — symptoms and what to do if the dose is exceeded
  • Storage — conditions and maximum storage time after opening

How Does Offline Synchronisation Work?

The data is downloaded automatically the first time the app is launched and refreshed in the background every 24 hours when the phone has an internet connection.

  1. First synchronisation — the app downloads documentation divided into ATC therapeutic groups. Each package contains a few to a dozen megabytes of compressed data; the full database is approximately 35 MB after compression
  2. On-device storage — the data is saved to the local SwiftData database and is available immediately after saving, with no need to reload it
  3. Incremental refresh — subsequent synchronisations download only the ATC groups whose documentation has changed, reducing data usage
  4. Offline availability — after the first synchronisation, everything works in aeroplane mode

Tip: A banner in the app shows synchronisation progress — you can follow each medicine group as it downloads or use the data that is already available without waiting for the whole process to finish.

Which Medicines Have Documentation Available?

Synchronisation covers Polish medicinal products organised by ATC code (WHO Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical classification). Documentation is available for:

  • Prescription-only medicines (Rx) and over-the-counter medicines (OTC)
  • Innovator and generic medicines
  • Medicinal products containing an active substance registered in Poland

The source data consists of extracts from SmPC documents published by the Office for Registration of Medicinal Products (URPL), processed and structured by mojApteczka.

On-Demand Translation

Documentation is stored only in Polish — this reduces the database size fourfold and removes the cost of machine translation. Users whose device language is not Polish see a "Translate" button next to every SmPC section.

Translation is performed locally on the device using Apple Translation Framework (iOS 18+) — no data is sent to an external server and there are no additional costs. The language models support all four app languages: Polish, English, Ukrainian and Russian. The language package (40–50 MB) is downloaded once and shared across all apps on the device.

How to Open the SmPC Documentation

  1. Open the medicine card in your home medicine cabinet
  2. Find the section "Active substance information: {substance name}" and tap it
  3. Browse the available SmPC sections — each one can be collapsed and expanded independently
  4. If needed, use the "Translate" button to display the content in your language

The documentation is labelled as information about the active substance (not a specific product), because SmPC data relates to the chemical compound, not a particular brand. An additional disclaimer banner reminds you that the content is for information only and does not replace medical advice.

Availability

The offline SmPC documentation feature is available in the iOS mobile app (iOS 17.0 or later required). On-demand translation requires iOS 18.0 or later.

Offline SmPC documentation is a pharmaceutical encyclopaedia that is always in your pocket. Synchronise once — read any time, regardless of signal.

Frequently asked questions

How many medicines have offline SmPC documentation available?
mojApteczka synchronises SmPC documentation for over 8,000 Polish medicinal products. Data is downloaded in batches by ATC group and stored locally on the device.
Does the SmPC documentation work without an internet connection?
Yes. After the first synchronisation (approximately 35 MB of compressed data), the documentation is available in airplane mode. The app refreshes data in the background once every 24 hours when the device has a network connection.
In which language is the SmPC documentation?
The source data is in Polish. Users with a device set to a different language can translate each section on demand using the Apple Translation Framework — locally, without sending data to an external server. Requires iOS 18.0 or later.
How does SmPC documentation differ from the patient information leaflet?
The patient information leaflet (PIL) is written in accessible language for non-medical users and focuses on usage instructions. The Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC) is a technical document approved by the regulator — it contains full clinical data: mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, active-substance-level interactions, and detailed safety information.
Is SmPC documentation available on Android and the web version?
Currently offline SmPC is available in the iOS mobile app. The web version and Android will receive this feature in future updates.
