AI Medicine Recognition — Scan the Package and Add a Medicine Automatically
No more typing medicine names and expiry dates manually. mojApteczka uses artificial intelligence to recognise a medicine from a photo of its packaging in just seconds.
What Is AI Medicine Recognition?
AI medicine recognition is a mojApteczka feature that lets you add a medicine to your home kit with a single photo. Simply snap a picture of the medicine package — artificial intelligence will automatically identify the brand name, active ingredient, dosage, form and expiry date.
Data recognised by AI is verified against the Medicinal Products Registry maintained by the Office for Registration of Medicinal Products, Medical Devices and Biocidal Products (URPL). This ensures the information about your medicine is up to date and consistent with the official registry.
How Does Medicine Scanning Work?
The recognition process is simple and takes just a few seconds:
-
Open the mojApteczka app and tap the "Scan" button
-
Take a few photos of the medicine package — the app will ask you to photograph:
- the front of the package — showing the medicine name
- the barcode — located on the box
- the expiry date — printed on the packaging or blister
Sometimes the front of the package shows both the name and expiry date, but make sure all three elements are captured: medicine name, barcode and expiry date
-
Wait for recognition — AI will analyse the image and match the medicine to the database
-
Review the result — verify the recognised details (name, dosage, expiry date)
-
Save the medicine to your kit with a single tap
The whole process typically takes 3 to 10 seconds, depending on photo quality and connection speed.
What Does the AI Recognise?
Our AI system analyses the package photo and automatically reads:
- Brand name — e.g. Apap, Ibuprom, Rutinoscorbin
- Active ingredient — e.g. paracetamol, ibuprofen, ascorbic acid
- Dosage — e.g. 500 mg, 200 mg, 100 mg/ml
- Medicine form — tablets, capsules, syrup, ointment, drops
- Expiry date — read from the packaging or 2D code
- Batch number — if visible on the photo
Which Medicines Can Be Scanned?
AI recognition works with medicines available in Poland — both prescription (Rx) and over-the-counter (OTC). The system supports:
- Medicines in cardboard boxes — the most common packaging type
- Blister-packed medicines — if the label is legible
- Dietary supplements — with clear labelling
- Foreign medicines — with limited accuracy
Tip: You'll get the best results by photographing each element (front, barcode, expiry date) in good lighting. Avoid angled shots and make sure the image is sharp.
Recognition Accuracy
The AI system is continuously improved and achieves over 95% accuracy for medicines available in Polish pharmacies. Before saving a medicine to your kit, you always have the option to verify and correct the recognised data.
For rare medicines or non-standard packaging, recognition may require manual correction of the name or dosage. The system learns from every scan, so accuracy keeps improving.
Data Security
Medicine package photos are processed securely:
- Photos are transmitted over an encrypted connection (HTTPS/TLS)
- AI analysis takes place on servers within the European Union
- Photos are deleted after recognition is complete — they are not stored
- Your medical data is protected in compliance with GDPR
